Jannik Sinner left a heartwarming moment with a fan during his
Wimbledon quarter-final match against Jan-Lennard Struff. The world No. 1 delivered a commanding performance to secure a straight-sets victory 7-5, 7-6, 6-3 and return to the semi-finals at SW19, extending his winning streak to 12 consecutive victories at the
All England Club.
The Italian did not only make headlines for his great level on court, but also for the touching moment he shared with a young fan. While Sinner was preparing to serve mid-match against Struff, play was interrupted after a child among the spectators shouted “Jannik” to greet the defending champion.
The world No. 1 – who was bouncing the ball while preparing for his first serve – stopped for a moment and looked directly at the child in the crowd to wave mid-match while smiling. Sinner’s friendly reaction sparked laughter among the spectators and an ovation in the seconds before he returned his focus to the match.
The moment went viral later on social media, providing another example of the Italian’s willingness to share gestures with his youngest fans. Sinner reached his 10th Grand Slam semi-final and is still waiting to find out his opponent, who will come from the winner between Novak Djokovic and Felix Auger-Aliassime.
“Today was quite a difficult match”: Sinner remains focused despite dominant Wimbledon run
Sinner has progressed calmly at Wimbledon, apart from an early scare in the first round against Kecmanovic – where he found himself two sets down – with the Italian winning 14 consecutive sets since then.
The 4-time major champion already experienced a surprise defeat at Roland Garros – largely because he was affected by the heat that surrounded Paris during that week – and for that reason, it has been a topic he has discussed in press conferences, regarding the London heat and how he has felt at Centre Court compared to other Grand Slam tournaments such as the Australian Open and Roland Garros.
“It felt okay – warm, but nothing crazy,” he said in press conference. “In Australia it’s tougher, because with hard court the heat comes from underneath. It was quite dry today, which is a big difference. When it’s humid and warm, it’s different again.”
Despite several apparently straightforward victories without setbacks, Sinner insisted that there are no easy matches and admitted that his quarter-final clash against Struff was a difficult battle.
“Today was quite a difficult match. He started very well, pushed right from the beginning; I tried to hold on, then I loosened up a bit and played better,” Sinner said. “But there’s certainly a bit of room for improvement.”
The Italian will look to extend his winning streak at SW19 in the semi-finals – where he currently owns 12 consecutive victories – and chase the seventh Grand Slam final appearance of his career. He will face the winner between Felix Auger-Aliassime and Novak Djokovic.
