Jannik
Sinner commented that he will request the
Cincinnati Open organizers to
schedule his matches starting on Wednesday after an exhausting week at the
Canadian Open.
The Italian
achieved the best result of his career so far, clinching the title at the
National Bank Open Toronto by dominating the final against Alex De Minaur.
Sinner
mentioned that this victory boosts his confidence for the upcoming US Open,
where he defends his quarterfinal appearance from last year, a match remembered
for his defeat against Carlos Alcaraz in 2022.
The
21-year-old tennis player played four matches in Canada, competing on
consecutive days against Gael Monfils, Tommy Paul, and De Minaur over Friday,
Saturday, and Sunday. As a result, he arrives in Cincinnati with some physical
fatigue due to the demanding effort.
According
to the organization's plans, Sinner could potentially play on Tuesday or
Wednesday, and he hopes that the scheduling takes into consideration his
request for more rest after the intense previous week.
"Yea,
for sure, it's a good confidence boost, no? especially going into the US Open.
It's going to be tough in Cinci because there's not so much time to adjust, but
we will ask for a Wednesday start,” Sinner said.
“Hopefully,
I can get the Wednesday start so I have a couple of hits before the match,
trying to be ready, yeah, for that tournament. And then trying to prepare in
the best possible way the US Open."
With the
title he secured in Canada, Sinner now ranks as the world No. 6, positioned in
a closely contested section of the rankings alongside Rune, Ruud, Rublev, and
Tsitsipas.
The points
distribution has these five players (ranging from world No. 4 to 8) separated
by less than 300 points, making the outcomes of the Cincinnati and US Open
tournaments crucial for each of them.
In this
context, Sinner gains an advantage as he currently stands fourth in the Race to
the ATP Finals, trailing behind Alcaraz, Djokovic, and Medvedev, and
maintaining a lead of over 700 points over the fifth-ranked player of the Race
(Tsitsipas).
As the 8th
seed,
Jannik Sinner will commence his journey in Cincinnati against the winner
of the match between Francisco Cerundolo and Dusan Lajovic, both of whom are
qualifiers.
