Gael Monfils was the first one on the courts in the Bulgarian Capital of Sofia today and he faced American Marcos Giron. The American played a very good event so far not allowing himself to get broken easily. That looked like the case early in the match as he was able to fend off some early break points. He even took a 4-2 lead early in the match but after that, he dropped off a little bit.
Monfils was misfiring a lot early but in the meantime settled in nicely to both play consistently from the baseline as well as to serve great. He pulled the break back and eventually went on to win the opening set with 7-5. After that, he simply dominated and wrapped it up with 6-0 in the 2nd set.
He will face title defender Jannik Sinner in the final as the Italian proved too good for
Filip Krajinovic today. He lost the only match he played the Serbian but today was a very good performance despite a 2nd set slip-up. Sinner more or less controlled the match early taking a 3-1 lead which he gave away some games later. At 4-3, he was able to break Krajinovic once more taking a 5-3 lead before closing out the set with 6-3.
He applied good early pressure on Krajinovic early in the 2nd set but the Serbian held his nerve. Krajinovic would even take a 4-2 lead and hold it until 5-3 when he served for the 2nd set. Then followed a slight dropoff while Sinner raised his level winning 4 games in a row to clinch the match. Krajinovic took a late medical timeout for a foot issue which could explain his sudden drop in the 2nd set.
