As soon as the news comes out about
Carlos Alcaraz making his return at the
US Open, his rival
Jannik Sinner has done the opposite and withdrawn from the competition with a right knee issue.
The 2024 champion reached the final last year where Alcaraz shone in a brilliant title victory. Sinner was hopeful of continuing his dominance on the ATP Tour in 2026 as he searched for another Grand Slam title to add to his collection, but that will not occur.
Following his run at Wimbledon, Sinner pulled out of the Canadian Open on health reasons. He would then skip the Cincinnati Open with there reports of him going to numerous hospitals for medical checks.
They turned out to be surrounding his right knee, and that persistent problem has seen him been forced to skip the
US Open, leaving a huge hole in the tournament while blowing it wide open for the likes of Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic to capitalise if Alcaraz is not 100%.
Sinner confirms US Open withdrawal
Sinner confirmed the news on his
Instagram page with a lengthy message. "Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year," he wrote.
"We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue.
"I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there."
The US Open singles event will take place from August 30 - September 13. It is yet to be seen how long Sinner will be out for, with all the matches and tournaments competed in 2026 finally catching up to him.
