Tennis journalist Guido Manco has stated that he has heard
from people that the former world number one America’s
Jimmy Connors is the ‘most
arrogant’ in the tennis world. The 72-year-old was one of the best players to
have played the game during his time and finished his career with eight Grand
Slam titles.
Connors has been once again in the news after he stated that
tennis will not be able to survive if the reigning world number one, Jannik
Sinner, is banned because of testing positive. The 23-year-old, who is often
regarded as one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis, has been
tested positive for banned substance Clostebol.
"I am not so close to it that I understand just what a
grain of salt of that does,” he said. “And to be honest, that’s not my style to
be a part of that. Listen, all I know is that I don’t think tennis at that
level could survive that to hit a top player. They have shown in the past that
they are not afraid to hit lower-ranked players and discard them from the game.
But I don’t know if tennis at that level could take it.”
Eurosport journalist Manco has been recently quoted in a
report where he spoke about Connors attitude during his playing days. He stated
that he has heard from some people that the former world number one was ‘arrogant’
during his playing days and is capable of saying ‘interesting things’.
"Connors? He's the person I hear the worst about in the
world of tennis, very arrogant, he had no friends on the circuit, he was
willing to do anything to win. It doesn't take away the fact that he could or
can say interesting things, but this time I have to understand the meaning.”
