John McEnroe who often gets criticised for his gaffes when it comes to commentary such as saying Nicolas Jarry was unknown once again courted criticism on Thursday at the Australian Open.
McEnroe was tasked with doing the post match interview on court at the Australian Open with the World No.1 Jannik Sinner but made a bit of a mess of it.
He asked Sinner if he knew Tristan Schoolkate who was his second round opponent who took a set off him, the first since October that Sinner has lost and the Italian as expected as he didn't play much juniors chimed in with that point. "Well, I didn't play many juniors", answered the World No.1.
McEnroe also followed up that question by saying that Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic 'also lost sets to a couple of unknowns."
But despite that there was some humour as he hilariously asked Sinner: “I’m pretty emotional. You’re able to control yourself so well. How do you do it?”
To which the Italian said: “We can say we are a bit different me and you” and McEnroe responded saying: "What are you saying?" to which Sinner jokingly ended the interview.
During that interview, he also touched on defending a Grand Slam title for the first time. “It’s definitely a different feeling. So many beautiful moments on and off the court happened for me here in this beautiful place. I take it as a chance to hopefully do it again. But it’s still a very long way to go. We go day by day. Seeing my level today, we know I can improve. Hopefully I can show this in the next round and it’s gonna be a great tournament for me again.”
McEnroe starts the on court interviewing asking Jannik Sinner if he knew Schoolkate from the Juniors.

- Having spent weeks and weeks through the years on tour, I can say with confidence that Conchita was (is) one of the very few who realize the surprising level of maturity (and sometimes lack of) which Mirra seems to have developed in such a demanding adult world of Pro-Tennis. While at the same time reminding herself (Conchita, that is) that Mirra is still young and developing mentally and physically. The general public may forget at times, or not at all realize, these modern era young athletes do not have a 'normal' Youth. It's a major sacrifice, among countless sacrifices, these athletes must make.
