John McEnroe picks Daniil Medvedev as biggest threat to Djokovic at US Open

Novak Djokovic is the favourite to win the US Open but several players could potentially challenge him and McEnroe thinks it will be Daniil Medvedev.

The upcoming US Open could potentially be a historic one where Novak Djokovic completes the first calendar grand slam since Rod Laver did half a century ago. Djokovic arrived in New York early to prepare for the event and the Serbian is widely expected to win the event.

However John McEnroe feels a certain player could challenge him:

"I look at Daniil Medvedev, he's the type of guy who is an extremely interesting kind of guy to watch tactically and an awkward guy to play and he is developing that reputation."

Medvedev has seen a fair share of success at the US Open reaching the final in 2019 and losing out to Rafael Nadal in 5 sets. McEnroe continued by saying:

"If he gets the right type of draw, and is able to conserve some energy, get through some matches that he is supposed to win, get deeper in the draw, he's set himself up as the most likely guy right now."

Djokovic will be extremely tough to stop yet the Serbian is not unbeatable. Medvedev had a taste of his dominance at the Australian Open where the Serbian easily defeated Medvedev in the Australian Open final despite many believing it as a possibly close match.
