Noted tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg has described Carlos Alcaraz losing to Fabian Maroszan as one of the most shocking results of the decade.
Carlos Alcaraz was a huge favourite against Fabian Maroszan in Rome, so much so that the odds on him to win were the lowest they can possibly be 1,01. There have been several upsets with those odds in the tennis before but this one was even more surprising because the Hungarian is simply not that well known.
He's ranked outside of the top 100 though inside of the top 150. He does play his best tennis on clay but he doesn't have much experience on the ATP Tour. This year has been very good so far for him as he proved quite good in the Davis Cup for Hungary earlier this year against France as well as recently in a couple of challenger events.
Still, Alcaraz is effectively number, plays incredibly on clay and just won the Madrid Open relatively easily. He couldn't simply stay with Maroszan today and got outplayed from start to finish. According to Rothenberg it's:
"Truly one of the most shocking results of the decade, if not the century."
