Novak Djokovic completed a major goal of his by winning the 2021 Wimbledon which leaves the Olympics as the 2nd but his participation is still questionable.
Djokovic spoke countless times about his desire to win a gold medal for his native Serbian at the Olympics but that achievement so far eluded him. After his historic 2021 Wimbledon win the Serbian was asked about his participation at the Olympics. He said:
“My plan was always to go to
Olympic Games, but right now I’m a little bit divided. I also hear that there’s going to be a lot of restrictions within the [Athletes’] Village. Possibly you would not be able to see other athletes perform live. I can’t even have my stringer that is a very important part of my team. I can’t have a stringer. I’m limited with the number of people I can take in my team as well.”
One major factor in the decision of Djokovic has always been the attendace of fans. Djokovic said months that he would not play if fans would be banned. The decision to ban fans became official several days which dissapointed Djokovic a lot. Speaking about that he said:
“It’s kind of 50-50 because of what I heard in the last couple of days."
