Thanasi Kokkinakis is back on the Tour and the Aussie scored a good win over
Fabio Fognini at the
Geneva Open 6-4 6-3.
Fognini has been having a lacklustre year as the Italian struggled with motivation and consistent play. He has always been a player that struggles with consistency and depending on the day his play can range from abysmal to spectacular. Today it was more of the former as Fognini failed to deliver a good enough level to beat Kokkinakis.
The Aussie took an early lead in the match, but eventually, Fognini battled back and made it 4-4. It did not last long as he complicated things once more by losing his serve late and dropping the opening set 6-4. The win injected Kokkinakis with more confidence as he jumped out to a great start in the 2nd set 3-0.
Fognini was just leaving too much on the table not being able to convert his break chances. He was also quite vulnerable on his 2nd serve and Kokkinakis was able to find good serves when he needed to. The Australian finished off the job 6-3 to move on in the Swiss city. For Fognini it's been one of the many disappointments lately.
