As the best ranked Australian, Kyrgios has a lot on his shoulders but he was never one to shy away fro pressure especially at the Australian Open

Recently while speaking to the media Kyrgios explained how it's still not clicked for him yet. Perhaps a good showing at his home slam would change that. His opponent was a promising youngster Sonego from Italy who had a bit of breakout last year. He is a tricky opponent he plays very well on his serve so Nick needed to be cautious, and he was.
The first set went largely into his favour. He was superb on his own serve winning 93 % of those points. A good combination of serve and volley allowed him to cruise on his serve while being competitive on his opponents. He broke him twice and secured the first set 6-2.
The second set saw a shift in momentum. The Italian was spectacular on his serve winning 94 % of his 1st serve. Kyrgios maintained a good effort on his own serve but dipped a bit to only 84 %. Naturally, we saw a tiebreak as we usually do when players are dominant on their own serves. Kyrgios who is somewhat of a specialist in tiebreaks had no issues conveying it into his favour 7-6(3)
The 3rd was more or less the same. Both players played well on their own serve winning it comfortably. The winner of the set would be decided in another tiebreak. And again it was all Nick Kyrgios in this one. He raised the level and won it easily 7-1.
Much to the delight of the home crowd, another Aussie is through to the 2nd round. How far can Nick go and whether he'll finally commit to tennis full time remains to be seen but for now he is doing fine.
