The evening session at the Laver Cup saw Taylor Fritz produced a masterclass to stun Carlos Alcaraz and claim the third win of the night for Team World in Los Angeles.
Fritz might be ranked World No.5 but he has lost to Alcaraz in three previous meetings including the semi-finals at Wimbledon last year. But he won 6-3, 6-2. After a great opening day for Team Europe, it somewhat fell apart on Day Two as Team World led from the front.
Adding to victories for Alex de Minaur and Francisco Cerundolo, it gives Andre Agassi's team a 7-3 lead over Team Europe going into the doubles which have just been won again by Team World who now have a 7-3 lead.
Holger Rune and Casper Ruud were soundly beaten by Alex de Minaur and Alex Michelsen, Alex Squared if you will 6-3, 6-4 in just over an hour and 20 minutes to claim another point and an 8-3 lead.
For reference, it is first to 13 points to lift the trophy on Sunday. Alcaraz was not at his sharpest two weeks on from winning the US Open final against Jannik Sinner to claim a sixth Grand Slam crown. Fritz took full advantage breaking Alcaraz in the first set, twice in the second and he saved both break points he faced.
Team World had trailed 3-1 after the opening day but the early damage was done as they pulled level with De Minaur's 6-1, 6-4 win over Alexander Zverev. This then saw Cerundolo outclass and outfox Holger Rune 6-3, 7-6(2).
"I knew what I had to do before I came out here tonight, the question was just if I was going to be able to do it," Fritz said.
"I didn't second-guess myself, didn't play too safe. I played with no fear on the big points."
While De Minaur, a late replacement mused that he channelled Federer who was watching on in the stands with his epic display as he also led from the front in a brilliant doubles win. "I think it brings a different type of energy," De Minaur said. "I enjoy when there's a bench, teammates I'm playing for."
"He wrote the playbook, I just read it," De Minaur said on the Federer comparisons with the Swiss icon watching on.
