Laver Cup Day Three Round-Up | Alexander Zverev finishes the job as Team Europe reclaim their crown

Alexander Zverev secured the Laver Cup for Team Europe, defeating Learner Tien 7-6, 6-3 in the first singles match of Day Three to take his team to the 13 points required to reclaim the trophy. The German's victory ended Team World's reign after their triumph in the previous edition and completed a decisive start to the final day for Europe.

Zverev's victory came after Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik had defeated Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur in the opening doubles, putting Europe within one win of the title. With those two results, the remaining scheduled singles matches between Carlos Alcaraz and de Minaur, and Rafael Jodar and Fritz, will no longer be required.

Team World were almost forced to start Day Three with a victory, and captain Andre Agassi turned to experience by pairing Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur in the opening doubles. Team Europe, meanwhile, went with Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik, a less experienced combination that nevertheless handled the pressure of the occasion impressively.

Fritz and de Minaur made the better start, immediately breaking serve and moving 2-0 ahead as Team World looked to put Europe under early pressure. Cobolli and Mensik responded quickly, however, recovering the break and gradually taking control of the set. Even after missing two set points at 5-5, the European pair stayed composed, breaking again before serving out the opener 7-5.

The momentum remained with Europe in the second set. Cobolli and Mensik broke for 3-1 and never allowed Fritz and de Minaur to recover, closing out the 7-5, 6-3 victory. The result put Team Europe 10-5 ahead and left Zverev needing just one more win to seal the trophy.

Zverev then completed the job against Tien in a match that was much closer than the final scoreline suggested. The first set was a tense battle from start to finish, with neither player able to find a breakthrough. Tien saved three break points when serving for the set, before Zverev survived a set point of his own and forced a tiebreak.

The German raised his level when it mattered most to take the tiebreak 7-3, putting Europe one set away from the title. Zverev then found the first break of the second set and moved into a commanding position, although Tien had one final opportunity to fight back when the German served at 5-2. Zverev saved three break points before serving out the victory in the following game.

The win gave Team Europe the three points required to reach 13 and reclaim the Laver Cup, bringing the trophy back after Team World's victory in the previous edition.

The early finish means Carlos Alcaraz's scheduled singles clash with Alex de Minaur and Rafael Jodar's meeting with Taylor Fritz will not take place. Both matches were listed as the next two contests after Zverev-Tien, but the Laver Cup requires a team to reach 13 points for victory, meaning neither was needed once Zverev secured Europe's winning point.

Team Europe now leads the overall Laver Cup head-to-head 6-3 after nine editions, having previously won in Prague (2017), Chicago (2018), Geneva (2019), London (2022) and Berlin (2024), while Team World had won three of the previous four editions before this year's event. The competition will move to Los Angeles for its 10th edition in 2027, with the Laver Cup scheduled for September 24-26 at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California.
