Feliciano
Lopez received a wild card for the ATP 500
Barcelona Open and matched Roger
Federer and Jimmy Connors in an incredible record.
The
41-year-old Spaniard is playing his final season as a professional and has
received several wild cards for big events.
Feliciano Lopez has played in major
tournaments despite being ranked 583rd. It has now been confirmed that he will
play in the ATP 500 Barcelona for the 22nd time, becoming the third player to
achieve this number of appearances in the same ATP event, after Jimmy Connors
at the US Open and
Roger Federer at Wimbledon.
Lopez first
played in the Barcelona Open in 1998 and only missed the tournament in 2001. He
has not won two consecutive matches in Barcelona since 2012 and has reached the
quarterfinals twice in his career, in 2011 and 2012. In his last appearance in
2022, the Spaniard suffered a painful defeat against Emil Ruusuvuri 6-0, 6-1 in
the first round.
