Holger Rune received a pretty damning verdict from the legendary former Grand Slam champion and commentator,
Jim Courier during his loss to
Alexander Zverev at the 2024
Paris Masters.
Rune was defeated by Zverev 6-3, 7-6 in favour of the German and Courier said that there was no rhyme or reason behind his play. He coined a phrase he has used previously saying it was like a jazz exploration as well as that his game is 'very immature'.
Rune has been criticised for this in the past and is a kink he has tried to iron out of his game with the Dane having multiple coaches in the past 12 months but not being able to find that steady rhythm or confidence on the court.
"I for one have no idea what he's trying to do out here. It's just all happening instinctively, it's like a full-blown jazz exploration out here. No rhyme, no rhythm. There's a lot of great things happening, it's just all scattershot and that is not a recipe for long-term success. It's still a very immature game," said Courier on Tennis Channel.
"If he wants to be with the big boys consistently. He's gonna have to find something he can rely on rather than throwing paint against the wall and seeing what it looks like when it's all said and done. He just needs a sense of order and doesn't have it."
