The Canadian Open semifinal lineup is now complete after a day that delivered contrasting paths into the last four. Brandon Nakashima and Ben Shelton continued the American charge in Montreal, while Rafael Jodar produced another major breakthrough by overcoming Frances Tiafoe’s conqueror Arthur Fils. Learner Tien also ended Daniel Merida’s impressive run to complete the semifinal field.

The victories reflected different strengths, from Shelton’s overwhelming serving performance to Jodar’s ability to absorb pressure and neutralize an aggressive opponent. Nakashima and Tien, meanwhile, relied on consistency and composure in the key moments to secure their places in the final four of the Masters 1000.

Nakashima produced a controlled performance from start to finish, taking advantage of his superiority on serve and return to defeat Darderi in straight sets. The American struck 11 aces, won 83% of his first-serve points and never dropped his serve despite facing four break points. He also broke Darderi three times, putting the Italian under constant pressure and making it difficult for him to establish any rhythm.

The second set brought more resistance from Darderi, who repeatedly pushed Nakashima in his service games, but the Italian could not convert his opportunities. Nakashima remained composed and took the chance that came his way before closing out the match on serve. The victory sends him into his first Masters 1000 semifinal and also guarantees his debut inside the ATP top 25.

Jodar secured one of the biggest victories of his run in Montreal by overcoming Fils in a match dominated by long baseline exchanges and contrasting styles. The Spaniard repeatedly neutralized Fils' aggressive game, using his defensive skills to absorb the Frenchman's power and extend rallies. Jodar made the better start, moving 3-0 ahead in the opening set before Fils recovered the break and forced a deciding tiebreak.

The Spanish youngster handled the pressure of the tiebreak particularly well, taking the first mini-break and then protecting his advantage behind his serve to take the opener. Jodar carried that momentum into the second set, continuing to frustrate Fils and making him work for every point. His ability to withstand the Frenchman's aggression ultimately proved decisive as he completed the straight-sets victory and reached the semifinals.

Defending champion Shelton delivered perhaps his most convincing performance of the tournament, leaving Mensik with very few opportunities to impose his usual game. The American was outstanding behind his first serve, winning 89% of those points, while he did not face a single break point throughout the match. Shelton also committed only three unforced errors in the opening set, compared with 18 from Mensik.

The second set quickly became even more one-sided as Mensik struggled to recover his level. Shelton secured two breaks to establish a commanding advantage, while Mensik managed to hold only one service game before the American served out the match. Shelton's performance not only keeps his title defense alive but also sends a clear warning ahead of the semifinals.

Tien ended Merida's impressive Montreal run by relying on greater consistency and composure in the most important moments. The opening set remained relatively close, but Merida's 20 unforced errors ultimately proved costly against an opponent who was able to keep the rallies under control and wait for opportunities. Tien took advantage of those mistakes to secure the opening set 6-3.

The second set followed a similar pattern, with Tien finding an early break and then doing enough behind his serve to protect the advantage. Merida continued to fight after his breakthrough run, but Tien remained solid when it mattered and closed out the match 6-3, 6-2. The American advances to his first Masters 1000 semifinal, while Merida's run ends one step before the final four.
