Former World No.1 Lleyton Hewitt is of the opinion that compatriot Alex De Minaur can make a run to the 2025 Australian Open final, following the Aussie's phenomenal performance during the 2024 season.
Hewitt was the last Australian man to win a Grand Slam title, having captured the 2001 US Open and 2002 Wimbledon trophies. However, no Australian man has won the home Grand Slam event since Mark Edmonson did so in 1976.
The 25-year old finished the 2024 season ranking of World No.9, after having reached a career-high of N0.6 earlier in the year. De Minaur ended the year by making his debut at the season-ending ATP Finals, becoming the first Australian man to do so since Hewitt achieved the feat in 2004.
Hewitt has worked alongside De Minaur several times when the youngster represented Australia at the Davis Cup, and the retired Aussie pro is confident that De Minaur has what it takes to make a strong run at this year's Australian Open. De Minaur has reached the fourth round at his home Grand Slam for the past three seasons, but is hoping to take that extra step at the Melbourne slam this year.
"Look, obviously now officially last year I struggled with an injury that sidelined me and took away one of my biggest assets, which was my movement. It took me a very long time to get back” De Minaur told reporters at the United Cup. “It was safe to say that it had been a long time since I felt my feet moving as quickly as they did today and doing all of that without pain.
"It was a really good feeling. So kind of gave me — you know, gave me some goose bumps because it felt good to finally be back at that level."
