Italy’s
Lorenzo Musetti has revealed that one of his motivations for beating Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic is to help fellow countryman
Jannik Sinner become world number one. The current world number two is often regarded as one of the most highly-rated players currently playing men’s tennis, along
with Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner has come into the
French Open knowing he can
dethrone the reigning world number one from his spot in the ATP rankings if he manages
to have a better outing. Musetti booked his place in the
third round at the Roland Garros after beating France’s Gael Monfils with a
score of 7-5, 6-1, 6-4. He will be facing the legendary tennis star who cemented
his spot in the round of 64 after beating Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena in
straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-1, 6-2.
Musetti was recently quoted in a report stating that one of his motivations to beat Djokovic in the upcoming contest is to help Sinner become world number one. "Against Djokovic I will also try to help
Sinner for No. 1," he said. "I wish him not to place his hopes on me.
He has his own path I think it is already well written but if I can give him a
hand, even a little. Patriotism doesn't hurt," he said.
