Lorenzo Musetti’s fitness struggles have landed him
another blow. The 23-year-old has found it challenging to maintain his fitness
this year. Recently, he was forced to retire from the semifinal of the French
Open against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. The final score of the match
was 4-6, 7-6, 6-0, 0-2.
In February, he withdrew from the Argentina Open just
before the start of the quarterfinal against Pedro Martinez. Two months later,
he suffered an injury in the final of the Monte Carlo Masters, where he
eventually lost to Alcaraz with a score of 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.
The recent setback at the Roland Garros has now extended
his time off the court as he has been ruled out of the upcoming ATP 250 event
in Stuttgart. The competition will begin on Monday. If Musetti had been fit, he
would have been the second-seed player in the tournament behind Alexander
Zverev.
After his outing against Alcaraz in Paris, Musetti spoke
to the media, stating that despite the result, he feels he is making strides
towards achieving his ultimate objective.
“I’m really sad and disappointed how it ended, but still
a great match,” said Musetti as quoted by
ATP’s official website. “I felt at
the beginning of the third when I was serving, I started losing a little bit of
strength on the left leg behind, and definitely was going worse and worse, so I
decided to stop. I think it was the right decision to make, even if it was not
what I wanted. Tomorrow I will do exams, and I will of course see and evaluate
the situation.”
Overall, Musetti is having an awe-inspiring season, boasting a win percentage of nearly 75, with 20 wins in 27 matches, according to
ESPN. Despite winning some notable battles, Musetti is still waiting for his
first ATP title since 2022.
