Lorenzo Musetti secured a great victory over
Frances Tiafoe, winning 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, and advanced to the semifinals of
Roland Garros. The world No. 7 continues in impeccable form on clay courts and reaches the semifinals of a Grand Slam for the second time in his career.
The Italian has gradually solidified his position as a title contender, following an almost flawless clay-court swing. Musetti is the second player with the most wins on clay this season, holding an 18-3 record since the start of the clay-court swing. The world No. 7 is in the semifinals of his fourth consecutive tournament.
First Set
Musetti was dominant in the first set, capitalizing on Tiafoe's inconsistencies on serve. He secured an early break, taking a 3-0 lead, and from there, he held firm on his serve. The Italian had an 80% first serve percentage, winning 75% of those points, compared to a poor 52% from Tiafoe, who only won 54% of his first serve points. The Italian saved a break point against him in the final part of the set and capitalized on the pressure on his opponent to take the lead 6-2.
Second Set
If it seemed like it would be an easy day for the Italian, Tiafoe still had a reaction to show. In the third game, he secured his first break of the match and then saved several break points against him to take a 3-1 lead. The American capitalized on Musetti's only moments of doubt on his serve and ultimately took the set 6-4, after 47 minutes. Things were leveled, and Tiafoe regained hope of pushing for victory.
Third Set
The third set was the most contested of all, with both players knowing it would be key to securing the victory. Tiafoe continued to struggle with barely a 41% first serve percentage, compared to Musetti's 61%. However, the world No. 16's effectiveness was notable; he won 100% of the points played on his first serve against his opponent's 78%. The score reached 5-5 without either of them having a break chance. Just like in the first set, Tiafoe struggled when he had the responsibility on serve to stay in the fight, and Musetti secured the break when a tie-break seemed inevitable. The Italian took the lead 7-5 and sent everything to a fourth set.
Fourth Set
Although everything had remained even in the third set, the late break seemed to affect Tiafoe, while at the same time revitalizing Musetti's confidence. A remarkable start from the Italian, winning 12 of the first 15 points played, put him up 3-0. From there, there wasn't much opposition from his opponent. Both held their serves, and when Tiafoe was serving at 2-5, he again suffered under pressure, giving his opponent three break opportunities. Musetti closed out the victory in four sets, maintaining a very high level from start to finish, winning 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. In the semifinals, he awaits the winner between Tommy Paul and Carlos Alcaraz.
