The Lawn Tennis Association's ban on Russian and Belarusian players during tournaments last summer resulted in financial losses due to the received fines but they hope to reduce it.
After refusing to allow players from Russia and Belarus to participate in their pre-Wimbledon grass-court tournaments due to the invasion of Ukraine, the LTA was fined a total of approximately GBP 1.4 million (USD 1.75 million) by the WTA and ATP. They have now reversed the decision to ban those players and are hoping to reduce the fine by a little bit due to that.
It's unclear whether the ATP and WTA will do that. LTA Chief Scott Lloyd said:
“We would have spent those funds in a different way. We’d rather not invest them in fines. Does it mean we have fundamentally retracted from our performance
competition calendar in 2023? No, because we feel so strongly that is
the right thing to do and the right thing to continue to invest in, so
we have prioritised doing so."
