In a day of Finals upsets, we have another one as Soon-woo Kwon defeats Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4 3-6 7-6(5) with a stellar comeback in the final set.
The South Korean player was having a dream week in Adelaide playing the best tennis of his life. He squeezed out a couple of wins against players who were objectively better than him and he did that in the final as well. Everything was working for him this week as he was far more aggressive than usual and both his forehand and backhand were on fire.
He risked more than his opponents and that worked out in his favour as well. Bautista Agut had chances in this match. He was up a break twice in the final set but failed to get it done each time. Every time he needed to step up to do the final step to victory, he failed. Kwon stayed in it, he didn't give up on the way he plays and it worked out in his favour.
He entered the main draw as a lucky loser.
