Rafael Nadal defeated Alexei Popyrin in straight sets and improved to a 106-1 in opening round matches on clay events.
This accomplishment is a new record and it's not a surprise with the way Nadal has always played on clay. Against Popyrin he put forward another great performance and defeated the Australian in straight sets 6-3 6-2 7-6(3). Nadal was lucky to escape with the 3rd set after Popyrin served for the set and choked as he himself called it.
Nadal said after the match:
“I am pretty happy with the way I played today. Not an easy match with Alexei who is a dangerous player.
When asked about the match overall he said:
“Well, the beginning of the match had been very tough too. He was playing bombs all the time and his serve was huge. And under these warm and fast conditions, it’s always difficult."
Nadal praised his opponent a lot and Popyrin deserved praise as he played brave tennis going head to head with Nadal in rallies. On the youngster Nadal said:
“He’s young and the speed of his ball is incredible. He’s fast running and when he hit the ball (he) is every time going for the highest power possible. So, was a tough match and I was lucky to win that third set. I don’t know how but I found a way, so super happy”
