Murray won in the end 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 to claim his best win since his return to action and in his first tournament of course since his Antwerp triumph last year.
The final set in particular saw Zverev's serve wobbled with multiple double faults in a game littered with unforced errors from both but the Brit recovered from the brink to set up a clash with Milos Raonic.
Murray claimed the first set 6-3 with a pivotal break coming at 3-1 up in a game which saw them both have chances to claim it. The Brit in particular had two break point opportunities and second time around he claimed it.
He held serve from there at 40-15 but himself survived two break point opportunities from Zverev at 40-15 down before he rallied back to claim it 40-A; which proved to be pivotal in the context of the set as he went on to claim it 6-3.
To begin the second set, both had opportunities once more. First was Murray on Zverev's serve as he went 40-15 up; but spurned his chance.
The same happened but at 40-0 for Zverev at 3-3 up and it continued on serve from there. A double fault saw it become 4-3; as Zverev had more break point opportunities to make it 5-3; which he took off an error from the Brit.
He was a hold away from making it 1-1 in sets. Two set points he took to make it go the distance; Murray had to find his quality here. Zverev went 30-15 up in pursuit of an early break; but Murray showed some early battle to hold his serve.
This happened once more on Murray's serve but Zverev was given the opportunity to break with the ball careering into the net. But it was soon Murray's advantage as he went 2-1 up on advantage letting out another show of emotion. This continued between points as he looked to gain control.
A break point was up for Murray; but after further errors from Zverev he claimed it to go 3-1 up hitting the angle to perfection.
The former World No.1 brought his unforced error tally though to 13 as he went from 30-0 to 40-40 as he looked to go two away from glory but he squeezed through to 4-1.
Zverev eased through his service game as he looked to trouble Murray on his. He was soon on 0-40 as Murray looked uncomfortable with his grip in particular on his racquet and he claimed a break back.
A new complexion of it being back on serve awaited. Murray looked good on return including some incredible anticipation but was at 30-30 and a few errors and an emphatic ace in the middle saw Zverev draw level and go three games in a row.
Multiple unforced errors saw another break opportunity for Zverev despite Murray having some easy chances going begging. He put it back to 40-40 but another miss saw Zverev have advantage.
A shot into the net saw Zverev claim it as he looked to serve to win. An opportunity presented itself to Murray as he was given break point but while Zverev himself had multiple unforced errors; Murray let out frustration as he spurned it.
Three double faults overall in the game saw Murray handed a break. Zverev continued to make mistakes and Murray went one away himself at 6-5. The double faults continued for the German as he went 0-30 down in a pivotal game. An outrageous shot from Murray saw match points brought up and he claimed it.
