The Spanish city of Malaga will host the 2024
Davis Cup Finals
as well, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) has confirmed.
This year, for the very first time, all the competition’s quarterfinal,
semifinal and final encounters were organised in Malaga. The move was not
welcomed by some of the big names such as Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic and Australia’s
Lleyton Hewitt.
Both were of the opinion that having Davis Cup at a
neutral venue and not playing on a home-and-away basis as it was used to is not
helping in engaging the local fans.
The current world number one’s journey in the competition
came to a bitter end as his side lost in the semifinal to Italy despite taking
a 1-0 lead.
Despite the opposition, the ITF has announced that Malaga
will once again host the Davis Cup Finals in 2024 as well. It was Italy who ended
up lifting the title as they defeated Australia in the final of the mega-event
on Sunday.
In the first game of the grand finale, it was Italy’s Matteo
Arnaldi who came out on top against Australia’s Alexei Popyrin with a score of
7-5, 2-6, 6-4. In the second match, it was young Jannik Sinner who once again
lived up to the occasion and outclassed Alex de Minaur in straight sets with a score
of 6-3, 6-0.
