Marcos Giron makes history at Indian Wells by becoming the oldest player to reach his first Round 6 at Indian Wells at nearly 40 years old. The World No. 48 is currently the lowest-ranked player in the Round of 16 and has been a surprise as a local with three consecutive wins.
Not only does he stand out for advancing, but he has defeated heavyweights along the way. In the first round, he defeated the 2021 Indian Wells finalist Nikolos Basilashvili, while in the second round, he pulled off a huge upset by eliminating World No. 5 and 4th seed Casper Ruud.
If anyone still had doubts about Giron’s level this week, he then defeated the 26th seed Alexei Popyrin, who had just 7 months ago won his first Masters 1000 title at the Canadian Open. Now, Giron awaits the winner of the match between Lorenzo Musetti and Arthur Fils to find out who his next opponent will be.
In his 30 Masters 1000 tournament appearances, Giron had advanced past the second round only six times, with a 22-30 record before his run at Indian Wells. This is the first time he has reached the Round of 16 in a Masters 1000 tournament, achieving this at 31 years and 228 days.
With this, he becomes the oldest player to reach the 4th round of Indian Wells for the first time since Marty Riessen in 1980, who managed the feat at an incredible 38 years and 71 days.
In 2022, at 29 years old, he reached his first ATP final but lost to Brandon Nakashima in San Diego. Two years later, he reached the DC Open final but fell again, this time to Tommy Paul. However, he had a revenge moment in July 2024, just three days before turning 31, when he won his first ATP title by defeating Alex Michelsen in the Newport final on grass courts.
