Jannik
Sinner (No. 4) clinches another straightforward victory by defeating Jesper de
Jong (No. 161) in the second round of the
Australian Open with a score of 6-2,
6-2, 6-2. The Italian took just an hour and 40 minutes to claim his second
consecutive win and secure a place in the third round.
The
22-year-old tennis player entered the Australian Open without any official
matches since late November when he led his country to win its first Davis Cup
title in almost 50 years. In the first round, he easily dispatched Botic van de
Zandschulp (No. 59) with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-5, 6-3.
De Jong
came into the match with Sinner well-acclimated, having navigated through three
qualifying matches and defeating Argentine Pedro Cachín (No. 74) in the first
round with a score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.
In the
initial four games, everything seemed evenly matched with both players
comfortably holding their serves. Sinner's superiority began to show in the
fifth game when he secured the break on his first opportunity. The Italian
claimed another break, winning a total of five consecutive games to comfortably
close the first set at 6-2, dominating with short points.
In the
second set, De Jong managed to win a game with his service, but Sinner resumed
his display, taking another five consecutive games to lead 5-1. Despite a minor
comeback attempt by the Dutchman with his serve, Sinner ultimately took his
second set point to lead 6-2.
The Italian
transitioned from an aggressive game in the first set with 15 winners and 8
unforced errors to a more composed style, moving his opponent with only 5
winners and 6 unforced errors. However, he maintained the same effectiveness to
secure the set.
In the
third set, Sinner's streak continued as he quickly secured two consecutive
breaks and held his service to lead 4-0. De Jong managed to win his last
service games towards the end of the match but showed no signs of a possible
comeback. Sinner closed the set again at 6-2.
Sinner was
flawless from the service throughout the match, losing only 10 points on his
serve. This marks Sinner's 40th victory in Grand Slam tournaments and the tenth
in Melbourne. In the third round, his opponent will emerge from the South
American clash between the 26th seed Argentine Sebastian Baez and the Colombian
world No. 87 Daniel Elahi Galan
