Arthur Fils is back towards his best and dazzling as he sealed the Japan Open on Tuesday afternoon in an all-French final seeing off Ugo Humbert 5-7, 7-6, 6-3.
Fils produced an unbelievable effort to claim his second ATP 500 title of the season. He saved match point in the final against his compatriot to win Tokyo. He also had a crazy run in the opening few matches.
He opened up by seeing off Taylor Fritz 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Matteo Berrettini was a 6-7 win with the Italian retiring. Ben Shelton, Holger Rune and finally Humbert in the latter rounds. Most of which have been late tie-break efforts. Whilst some have been comeback wins.
It gave the 20-year-old Fils his third career title and second this year following his success in Hamburg. Humbert previously had a flawless 6-0 record in finals. But he finally loses that. Fils became the youngest champion in Tokyo in over 40 years and faced a match point in the second set tiebreak.
He survived it to level the match before breaking Humbert for a 5-3 lead in the final set to leave him serving for the championship. He clinched it on the first match point with an ace before collapsing to the ground. A fantastic French win from Fils as he takes another title.
