Jack Draper wasn't fit during the 2021, 2022 and 2023 seasons and finally has started to make some strides when it comes to consistency without getting injured. But disaster has struck again at the Japan Open.
Draper cut a hobbled and forelorn figure as he left the court having to retire a set and a break down against Ugo Humbert in a battle of top 20 stars. He was 7-5, 2-1 down in the Quarter-Finals as he looked to reach yet another semi-final.
Especially a missed opportunity given the myriad of big names who have already departed the tournament already this week in Tokyo. Many of whom were expected to be leading lights and floundered from there in the opening two rounds. Humbert will now face Tomas Machac for a spot in the semi-finals. Fils v Shelton and Nishikori v Rune is in the other half.
Draper received treatment for an abdominal complaint early in the second set and at 2-1, he could no longer continue. This brought his tournament to a close. It was his first ATP Tour tournament since his run to the last four at the US Open earlier this month. He continued initially after treatment but decided against it.
Potentially this is merely precaution after his previous woes with injury or it could be yet more problems for Draper.
