Italy will compete at the second edition of the ATP Cup in the first week of February, led by Matteo Berrettini, Fabio Fognini, Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori.
Jannik Sinner and Salvatore Caruso will not carry the national colors in Melbourne, and it is still a strong team ready to battle for the semi-final spot, especially if Berrettini and Fognini bring their best tennis. Italy won two out of three rubbers at the inaugural ATP Cup last January, suffering a 3-0 loss against Russia before bouncing back against Norway and the USA.
It wasn't enough to reach the quarter-final stage, and the Italians will try to change that in a month, facing other 11 teams in the battle for the trophy. Berrettini is still the top-ranked Italian despite only nine victories in 2020, struggling to find the form and playing only a couple of tournaments, hoping for a better run in the season ahead of us.
Fabio Fognini had an even worse season, scoring only six victories and undergoing arthroscopic surgery on both ankles in May. Fognini trained with Grigor Dimitrov in Monte Carlo in December and will kick off the season in Antalya in a couple of days, seeking a deep run and hoping to face Matteo Berrettini in the title clash.
