Matteo Berrettini outlasts Oscar Otte for US Open quarterfinal

Matteo Berrettini is through to the US Open quarterfinal after outlasting a tired and injured Oscar Otte 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-2.

Matteo Berrettini won another match at the US Open and this came in 4 sets against Oscar Otte who struggled in many ways. The first set was tightly contested as both players played rather well. Otte saved an early break point but settled after that. Berrettini did not initially create many chances but found ways to attack Otte. Later on, he carved a break point and converted it to take a lead.

It proved enough for the first set 6-4. The 2nd was another entertaining one that saw a fierce battle in the majority of games played. Otte was able to play some great tennis early breaking Berrettini for the 3-0 lead. After that, he held his composure to close out the set with 6-3 as the Italian ever quite got back into the set. The next set followed a similar pattern.

Lifted by the set win, Otte played some strong tennis early carving out a break point. After failing to use it he collapsed a bit which gave Berrettini an opportunity that he took. From there it was smooth sailing to win the 3rd set with 6-3. Otte took a tumble early in the match across the net but seemed fine after it. However, after a while, he started feeling the effects of that tumble and tiredness from his previous matches.

The German is not used to going deep in grand slams and after a while, his body let him down. He took several MTO's early in the 4th set but it did not help much. Berrettini was too strong for Otte who simply could not resist the Italian and Matteo closed it out with 6-2. A solid match by both players but Berrettini dominated with his forehand which was enough for Otte.
