Matteo Berrettini commented on his defeat in the
Stuttgart Open final against
Jack Draper. The Italian, a champion in 2019 and 2022, was ahead by one set on Sunday but couldn't overcome the resilience of the young Brit, who claimed his first title with a 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 victory.
The former world No. 6 returned to Stuttgart after a two-month pause due to injury. The Italian last played at the Monte-Carlo Masters but later revealed he wasn't 100% physically and needed more time off the courts to avoid injuries, skipping the clay swing.
Berrettini laments the defeat
Injuries have been unfair to Berrettini, who has performed well whenever he's been able to play. The 28-year-old has a 9-3 record in 2024, with a title at the Marrakech Open and now a runner-up finish in Stuttgart.
The former
Wimbledon finalist once again showcased his exceptional grass-court play, with victories against strong opponents like
Denis Shapovalov and
Lorenzo Musetti. However, he couldn't match Draper, who seems ready to take a step forward on the Tour after securing his first professional title and reaching his career-high ranking of world No. 31.
"Congratulations to Jack, it was a fantastic week and match. This defeat will hurt me for a while, I have won and lost matches like this," the Italian commented during the trophy ceremony. "Jack, I am sure that you will win other trophies. Now, however, I am a little sad," he added.

"I thank my team, we know what we have been through, many ups and downs. I would like to show you what happens behind the scenes, I thank you for having accompanied me in this return of mine. For the public at home, I am sorry for having lost but thank you for the support: you are the best. To the public in Stuttgart, every year there are more of you: I thank you."
