Matteo Berrettini played a very strong match in Stuttgart coming back to win over compatriot Sonego who was great as well 3-6 6-3 6-4.
A couple of Italians went head to head in Stuttgart as Matteo Berrettini took on Lorenzo Sonego and early on it was the younger Sonego who proved better. He served better and on grass that certainly helps you quite a bit. Berrettini was not able to finish off points as quick as he wanted to and the chances that Sonego had were enough for him. It was 6-3.
The 2nd set opened better for Matteo as he was in rhythm and attacked well. Sonego had one of his typical lapses and it gave Berrettini the lead 4-1 lead. The big-serving Italian would go on to hold his serve and close out the 2nd set 6-3. That final game featured a huge hold from 15-40 down and it proved quite a confidence builder for him.
He dropped only two points on his first serve while he was pretty poor on his 2nd serve. In the final set, it was Berrettini once more who proved slightly better. He got a chance early to go up and he was able to take it 3-1. He was serving well and that allowed him to dominate on his serve with ease.
He continued holding his serve until the very end finishing off the match 6-4 in the final set. Overall a very good match from Berrettini albeit far from his capable best.
