Andy Murray played a fabulous event but ultimately he fell short against one of the best grasscourt players on the Tour Berrettini 4-6 7-5 3-6.
Matteo Berrettini did not play for a few months but the Italian did not skip a beat upon returning to grass. He looked as comfortable as ever this week as he waltzed his way to the final where he proved the better dancer than Murray. Berrettini and Murray both played really solid matches but ultimately the Italian just had more when it mattered the most.
In the opening set, both had a period of struggling early with their serve but Berrettini was able to take his chances and break Murray. The Brit failed to do that and once they settled in a nice rhythm it was over for the Brit. The Italian cruised to a 6-4 opening set finish. The 2nd set featured more struggle from Murray as he had to endure a lot of pressure from Matteo in several service games.
He was able to do it and finally got a very bad game from Matteo at 6-5 in the 2nd set to take it 7-5. He was pumped with a strong belief he might win the whole match but a cold shower came early in the 2nd set when Berrettini took an early 2-0 lead with Murray calling for an MTO. The physio looked at Murray's hip area which was an unwelcome sight.
Murray stopped play once more at 2-4 in the final set for another MTO with the physio looking at the hip/groin area. It's not a very good look for Murray after such strong play this week. In the end, Berrettini finished off the comeback in style 6-3 in the final set.
