Matteo Berrettini returned to clay this year with a match in Gstaad against Richard Gasquet and he won it 6-4 6-4 to move on to the quarterfinals.
Berrettini last played at Queen's Club where he beat Krajinvoic in the final to lift the trophy. He was set o play Garin at Wimbledon but a positive COVID test forced him to withdraw from the tournament too much disappointment. Berrettini is still not over it but for a brief moment, he was able to forget about it a play a tennis match in Gstaad.
The opponent was Richard Gasquet and the French player gave him a proper battle yet not strong enough to really challenge him. Berrettini is a natural fit in Gstaad due to his powerful serve and general comfortability on clay. The first set was fairly close with neither having any early chances. Berrettini was able to find his first break points late in the set and take it 6-4.
There was very little separating them but eventually, Berrettini was able to take advantage of a poor game by Gasquet at the worst possible time. The 2nd set was fairly similar as Berrettini was able to take his chance when he needed to while largely avoiding getting broken on his own serve. He served well the whole day so it made it quite easy for him.
