Fans
reacted to
John McEnroe's calm demeanor during the altercation between Felix
Auger-Aliassime and Gael Monfils during the
Laver Cup match
Last
Friday, during the 2023 Laver Cup, there was a tense confrontation between Team
World's
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Team Europe's Gael Monfils due to Monfils'
antics on the tournament's first day.
The
argument centered around the fact that Monfils did not receive a warning for
exceeding the allowed time between points, which upset Auger-Aliassime, who
questioned whether ATP rules were being enforced.
“Are you
sticking to the ATP rules? Are you telling me that’s normal? He sits down for
like 30 seconds. I mean, that a time violation warning. That’s not, ‘I’m gonna
talk to him.’ Cause I can play games too. I can play games too,”
Auger-Aliassime said to the umpire.
What's
curious is that 7-times Grand Slam champion John McEnroe, captain of Team World,
remained silent during the altercation, which surprised fans. This led to
mockery on social media, as McEnroe was known for his on-court temper during
his career.
The
situation left many wondering if McEnroe would have acted differently in his
prime, suggesting that perhaps he would have intervened energetically in the
dispute. McEnroe's reaction, or rather lack of reaction, became a topic of
conversation on social media and elicited humorous comments from tennis fans.
"McEnroe
in the 80's he would have started a fight in the most normal way in the
world," they wrote.
"I
need John McEnroe’s ‘Never Have I Ever’ narration here," the fan wrote.
"This is art 🎨 McEnroe not able to get in the middle of two Black Francophones scrapping and Ben ready to jump in"
"Was there a reason to be THIS dramatic"
"Wth is going on? Calm down Felix.. Oh my goodness #LaverCup"
"No one can understand them though since they were speaking French!"
"Felix “needs an exo win”, as he’s not winning on the tour"
