American tennis legend John McEnroe believes that rising Canadian stars Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime will do very well at Wimbledon, adding that both men could win a Grand Slam in the near future.
Shapovalov reached the semifinals in Queens last week, whereas Auger-Aliassime made it to the same stage in Halle, defeating 10-time champion Roger Federer along the way.
When asked which one of the duo would have more success on grass, McEnroe gave the slight edge to the 12th-ranked Shapovalov.
"Very tough question. Both of them could go pretty deep in this tournament, without a doubt,” The seven-time Grand Slam champion said in an interview with ESPN. "I think both have made some great strides and progress. Denis is a little more advanced. I’d give him the slight edge. Felix just beat Roger. His confidence is on the rise. He’s looking to be more aggressive and move forward more."
However, he was quick to point out that both players had enormous potential, and the tennis world would soon see them lifting Major trophies in the near future.
"It’s a tough call. I would give Denis a slight edge at this particular time," added McEnroe. "I think both of them are going to win majors at some stage in the not-too-distant future.”
