BIGGEST WIN BY RANKING 👏 @AdrianMannarino (the only former champ left) defeats Medvedev 4-6 6-4 6-2 🥶 @LibemaOpen #LibemaOpen
Daniil Medvedev was excited about returning to grass following his shocking Roland Garros exit but it didn't go that much better as he was beaten by Mannarino 4-6 6-4 6-2.
The Russian played at the event last year and made it to the final eventually losing to Tim van Rijthoven. The Russian defeated Mannarino en route to the final last year but this time around he couldn't get past the French player. Mannarino is an excellent grass player and has been for years. He always plays in Den Bosch as he won a trophy in the past.
This win by Mannarino is surprising but it's not shocking. Medvedev can play these smaller events quite casually and that was the case this time around as well. The Russian for the most part plays the same always but if it's not working then he's in trouble. It worked in the opening set even though he didn't serve that well.
The second set saw him serve a bit better but generally, Mannarino gave him trouble in the rallies. He took an early 2-0 lead and then got broken by the Russian but still managed to break in the final game of the set to send the match into a 3rd set. The third set was a very weak one by Medvedev as he really didn't care that much.
He played quite casually, far too much and Mannarino used that as he was more focused. Even though Mannarino didn't serve that well, Medvedev couldn't exert too much pressure failing to create any break chances. He got broken twice in the final set including the final game of the match that sealed the win for Medvedev.
An okay match but nto serious enough from the Russian. He'll now travel to Germany for the Halle Open. He played in the final last year.
