It took quite an effort from Medvedev to battle past Maxime Cressy but he was able to do it winning 6-2 7-6(4) 6-7(4) 7-5.
Maxime Cressy was playing a superb event in Melbourne but he ran into
Daniil Medvedev who halted his surge. The Russian did not cruise in this match as the American proved quite tough to overcome. Initially, in the first set Medvedev controlled the match rather easily. Cressy was a bit nervous and he did not play well at the start with Medvedev winning the opening set with 6-2.
The 2nd set was very close where Medvedev failed to create a single break point in. Cressy was the only one who had a break point and it came very late at 6-5. It was a set pint that he failed to convert and that cost him the set when Medvedev outplayed him in the tiebreak. The 3rd set was another close one where both players played well.
Neither played was able to force a single break point and we ended up in the tiebreak where the American proved better. Cressy served well and played well to win it 7-4 and make the match even more interesting. In the final set, Medvedev played better but he simply could not produce a winning rally when he had a break point.
Cressy was able to hold on several times in situation where realistically he should not have. He faced 9 break points in total in the final set with Medvedev only using the 9th none. He closed it out with 7-5 finishing the match after three and half hours.
