Russia won through to the semi-finals at the ATP Cup with a win over Argentina, but Daniil Medvedev lost his temper in his victory over Diego Schwartzman.
Medvedev was given a point penalty for twice banging the umpire’s chair of Mohamed Lahyani during the second set of his 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win.
“The warning you got [was] for unsportsmanlike conduct,” Lahyani said.
“Why?”, the Russian asked.
“Your action was too much, I told you to stop and you kept doing [it] …” the umpire replied, as a frustrated Medvedev thumped Lahyani’s chair with his racquet while the crowd hooted in disapproval.
“Stop,” the umpire said. “You have the warning, stop. Because the action you did was too much.”
Medvedev then asked whether his opponent had a warning for his part in the verbal exchange.
“No, he doesn’t,” Lahyani said, before Medvedev hit the chair a second time, harder than before. The Russian was then awarded a point penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.
