Daniil Medvedev is through to the second round at the 2020 Australian Open with victory over Frances Tiafoe but despite that, it was very much mixed emotions.
Medvedev said that while he was pleased to be through his opening round, he was not happy with his serve.
He also said it was a very different contest for him as for once he was the main attraction as opposed to being the underdog.
“It felt different because that's the first time in my life I was stepping out on the centre court in the first round of a Grand Slam as a favourite,” said Medvedev.
“[I am] happy with the win because that's most important. First round of a Grand Slam, never easy,” added Medvedev.
“Sometimes the most important [thing] is to really not show some crazy level or crazy shots, but just to win the match, get into the tournament. It was a tough match against Frances, but happy to win it in four sets without playing five hours.”
“I have a lot of things to improve regarding today's match. Especially the serve, I was not happy at all with my serve,
The most important [thing] is to win, to just win the match, get into the second round, get the sensations of the court, of the atmosphere, everything. Usually later in the tournament everything goes better and better.”
