Russian tennis star
Daniil Medvedev has withdrawn from the
upcoming DC Open in Washington.
The tournament is one of the few used by the players to prepare
for the last Grand Slam of the year — the US Open.
However, in a surprising turn of events, the current world
number three has ruled himself out of the DC Open.
Medvedev became the second high-profile player after Canada’s
Denis Shapovalov to withdraw from the tournament. The 24-year-old announced the
development on Tuesday.
The development might concern Medvedev fans who would be
hoping to see their star player return to his very best and produce a similar
kind of performance as he did two years ago.
The 27-year-old’s only Grand Slam title was winning the US
Open back in 2021 when he defeated Serbia’s legendary tennis player Novak
Djokovic in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
Medvedev is coming off the back of an impressive outing in
Wimbledon where he was knocked out by the eventual champion and current world
number one Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinal with a score of 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.
It was the first time when the Moscow-born player managed to reach
the semifinal of the third Grand Slam of the year as before this year, his best
outing in the competition was a fourth-round exit back in 2021.
