Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev took care of a dominant victory of Russia over Argentina at the 2021 ATP Cup.
Last year, Russia reached semifinals of the inaugural ATP Cup when they lost to later champions, Serbia. However, this year the story can be much different. World number 4, Daniil Medvedev and no. 8, Andrey Rublev lead the Russian team and they are the biggest favorites to win the tournament alongside Serbia and Spain.
Russia is the only country at the 2021 ATP Cup that has two players from the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings, and it showed in their first tie against Argentina. In the first match, Andrey Rublev showed a very dominant performance against Guido Pella when he lost only 3 games in a 60-minute victory 6-1, 6-2.
After that, Russian no. 1, Daniil Medvedev took on Argentinian best player, Diego Schwartzman. Although Medvedev was quite good at creating and converting break point opportunities when he used 5 out of 10 he had, he was not so good at avoiding them on his own service.
After 100 minutes, Medvedev defeated Schwartzman 7-5, 6-3 to secure the first victory at the 2021 ATP Cup for Russia. Already tomorrow, Russia will take on Japan in a tie that can decide about the first semifinalist. You can follow it with the TennisUpToDate Live Scores by clicking here!
