After
Rafael Nadal withdrew from Spain's opening tie of the 2021
ATP Cup,
Roberto Bautista Agut and Pablo Carreno-Busta needed to step up their game to defeat Australia.
World number 2, Rafael Nadal was supposed to lead his country at the 2021 ATP Cup, but that wouldn't happen during the first tie against Australia as the experienced Spaniard needed to withdraw due to an injury.
Therefore, Roberto Bautista Agut became the Spanish no. 1, and Pablo Carreno-Busta took care of the first singles match as no. 2. Although, Carreno-Busta replaced Nadal last-minute, the Spaniard showed a great performance.
World number 16, Carreno-Busta defeated
John Millman 6-2, 6-4 in just an hour and 18 minutes and prepared the soil for success for Roberto Bautista Agut. No. 13 in the ATP Rankings, Bautista Agut faced
Alex De Minaur.
Although he was losing already 1-5 in the first set, he managed to get both breaks back and the scoreboard showed 4-5. However, the Spaniard lost the first set and needed to come back. He managed to successfully do that and win the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in more than 2 hours to guarantee the first point at the 2021 ATP Cup for Spain.
