Ashleigh Barty and
Garbine Muguruza are through to the last 16 at the WTA 500
Yarra Valley Classic event in Melbourne after scoring straight-set victories.
Competing for the first time since Doha last February, world no. 1 Barty ousted Ana Bogdan 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 17 minutes. The Aussie produced some serious numbers behind the initial shot to stay away from troubles.
Also, she pushed the rival's second serve to the limits and grabbed three breaks from seven opportunities, enough to carry her home. From 3-2 down in the opener, Barty claimed four straight games and sealed the set with a break at love at 5-3 when Bogdan netted a backhand.
Ashleigh scored another break in the second set's sixth game and wasted two match points on the return at 5-2. Serving in game nine, the home favorite saved a break point and converted the fourth match point with an ace that carried her through.
The 6th seed Garbine Muguruza defeated Alison Van Uytvanck 6-2, 6-0 in swift 53 minutes, dropping only nine points behind the initial shot and delivering five breaks to control the scoreboard and sail over the finish line in style.
