After Andrey Rublev secured the first point, Daniil Medvedev did his part of the job securing the 2nd point which wins Russian the tie against Ecuador.
It was a very fierce debut by Daniil Medvedev in the Davis Cup Finals as the Russian wasted no time against Emilio Gomez. While not a complete rookie on the ATP Tour, Gomez very rarely has the chance to play against arguably the 2nd best player in tennis at the moment. The Ecuadorian enjoys playing a very attacking style of tennis but that style does not do well against Medvedev who is a literal wall.
The Russian was a proper wall in this match absorbing everything Gomez had to offer in the first set sending balls back without issue. Gomez tried to compensate with more power and risk but it did not work as errors started piling up and rather quickly Medvedev captured the first set with 6-0. It took him only 25 minutes and we were already in the 2nd set.
It once again started with an early break and a 2-0 lead but after that Gomez was finally able to win a game avoiding a complete disaster against the Russian. Better serving overall allowed the Ecuadorian a bit of wiggle room in the 2nd set but even with that Medvedev was dominating. After taking a 3-1 lead he broke Gomez once more to make it 4-1.
From there it was a rather fast finish for Medvedev who closed out the 2nd set with 6-2 to win the match 6-0 6-2 in less than 60 minutes. A solid start for Russian who will look to complete the 3-0 sweep against Ecuador later today.
