Mektic and Pavic propel Croatia over Italy 2-1 for the Davis Cup Finals semifinals

Nikola Mektic and Mate Povic came up clutch for Croatia at the Davis Cup Finals defeating Sinner & Fognini for a spot in the semifinals.

One of the best doubles pairings in the world did not crack under pressure and played a very solid match to defeat the Italians in front of a packed Arena in Turin. The Italians were initially going to send out Bolleli and Fognini but decided against it sending Sinner out once more. It did not matter much to the Croatians who played their games and won rather easily.

From the start, it was evident that it would be a struggle for the Italians as they had trouble winning their service game from the start. Mektic and Pavic were able to win rallies in each returning game and it was only a time before they would find a breakthrough. Eventually, it came late in the first set with the Croatians coming out on top 6-3.

The 2nd set followed a very similar pattern with the Croatians exerting pressure early in the set. The Italians were able to hold on for the first few initial games but for the most part, Mektic and Pavic were clearly the better doubles pairing on the court. They broke the Italians at 3-3 to take a 4-3 lead after which they closed it out with 6-3.

A great win for Croatia who proves to be a very formidable opponent especially with the best doubles pairing in the world on their roster.
