Australian tennis player
John Millman has criticised former
world number one America’s
John McEnroe
for his comments regarding Chile’s
Nicolas Jarry.
The 27-year-old lost to world number one Spain’s Carlos
Alcaraz in the third round of
Wimbledon 2023 after a hard-fought contest.
McEnroe, while commentating during the match, said that: “We
don’t know Jarry but we’ll get to know him."
In response to that, Millman criticised the 64-year-old and
stated that it is ‘ridiculous’ for a commentator to claim that he does not know
a player who is the current world number 28.
“How a commentator can say “we don’t know Jarry but we’ll
get to know him” is beyond ridiculous. 87 million people play tennis worldwide
and this guy is the 28th best at it currently,”
he tweeted.
Jarry ended his campaign in the round of 32 of the third
Grand Slam of the year after losing to the reigning world number one with a
score of 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 on Saturday.
Despite that result, the Santiago-born would be pleased with
his performance in the tournament where he defeated Italy’s Marco Cecchinato in
the first round (4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1) and Australia’s Jason Kubler in the round
of 64 (7-5, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4).
