Austrian tennis star
Dominic Thiem has continued his
impressive run of form in the Astana Open.
The 30-year-old defeated America’s Marcos Giron in the round
of 16 tie with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 7-6.
While doing so, Thiem ended up qualifying for the
quarterfinal of an ATP event for the 76th time where he will face Sebastian
Ofner.
The result will be an important one for the world number
three who has struggled with injuries over a long period of time.
While returning to full fitness this year, Thiem has had a
hard time getting success at the highest level where despite playing in all
the Grand Slams, he failed to qualify for the third round or beyond in any of
the mega events.
His best outing came in the recently concluded US Open where
the Wiener Neustadt-born managed to qualify for the second round and lost to
American’s Ben Shelton with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.
Thiem will be hoping that his recent run of form where he
has won seven out of the last eight matches will help her return to his very
best like he was in 2020.
It was the year where he won his first and till now only
Grand Slam after beating Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the final of the US Open
with a score of 2–6, 4–6, 6–4, 6–3, 7–6.
