Gael Monfils defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis in the ATP Adelaide International semifinal moving on to the final where Karen Khachanov awaits.
Monfils entered 2022 in very good form showing some exceptional tennis in the first week of January. The Frenchman faced off against another comeback player with Kokkinakis who is finally enjoying good health and playing competitive tennis. As inspiring as Kokkinakis played in Adelaide Monfils proved much better winning 7-5 6-0.
It was a relatively competitive first set where both players were able to hold their serve with a combination of timely serving and good play when serving. Monfils was a bit better on his first serve while Kokkinakis was a bit better on his 2nd serve. Ultimately Monfils used his break points while Kokkinakis did not and that is why he won 7-5.
Injected with confidence Monfils started playing much better. Kokkinakis meanwhile lost a bit of confidence and his play got worse. Those two things combined resulted in Monfils cruising in the 2nd set winning 6-0. The Frenchman will take on Khachanov who defeated Cilic earlier in the day. The final should be a good one as neither player won a trophy in quite a while so the stakes will be high.
